Greetings from “The Lion King”

Another successful District meeting occurred last weekend at the Boy Scout Camp near Lake Cachuma. We arrived about 7PM and it was DARK!!! Fortunately there were signs that pointed us to the correct turn, after the entrance to the Lake. And fortunately my 1973 RV still had enough oomph to get us up the hill. We enjoyed our dinner and some of us even sang Karaoke! (Didn't you George and Lynn!) Saturday dawned bright and beautiful. And after a good breakfast we had our District meeting. Of course, yours truly, as the District Song Leader, had a part in the opening ceremonies and sing we did! (If you weren't there how could you appreciate what a talented person the AG Lions have as President!) The usual reports were given and the usual awards bestowed to those worthy workers. Lion VDG George got to do his thing too so the Arroyo Grande Club was well represented at the microphone. Other Lions there from the Club were Lion Terry and Lion John. Lunch was a bit of a hassle because the line was sooooo long. Afterwards Pam and I went for a hike on the COPE course. This is really for the Boy Scouts so Pam and I just hiked and followed the course. It was a beautiful day and Lake Cachuma was spotted with sail boats that seemed to be participating in a regatta. It was a glorious sight! Dinner was preceded by hospitality at George and Lynn's Trailer. I'm surprised we all made it up the hill in order to eat! Pam and I truly had a great time and I encourage the Club to go to a district meeting and meet your fellow workers in Lionism and find out what is happening in the District. Carve a notch out of your busy schedule and plan on going to the next one!
From the ”LION KING”, JACK GATZ!

Lion Vice District Governor George Stewart
District News

This past weekend we attended the second District Meeting at Rancho Alegre Boy Scout Camp. All in attendance had a great time. Our guests were Vice District Governor Jim North and his wife Lion Doris from 4L4. In addition to the regular meeting we had a leadership-training seminar by PDGs Nancy and Joel Keyte. Also there was a seminar on Orientation and Retention conducted by PDG Pam Burdick from the MD4 Leadership training team. On Friday night I presented my report, which is included below. “I decided to run for the position of Vice District Governor a year ago this month. During this past year I have traveled many miles and visited many clubs. It has been exciting and rewarding. I had the opportunity to listen to your suggestions and see your clubs in operation. I’ve conducted a District meeting, inducted new members, and installed new officers. We’ve shared in your joys (new members), triumphs (fund raisers), and sorrows (passing of PDG Rod Franz, Bob Banner, Jim Taylor, Curly Quaresma, and others). I’ve had the pleasure of introducing our District Governor, visiting with Past International Directors, several past International Presidents, our First Vice President, and our current President, Kay. We’ve attended several Council of Governor’s meetings, and we are making new friends, such as Chuck and June, and Jim and Doris and renewing old acquaintances. We’ve seen the fun, the frustrations, and the deliberations at those meetings. We had the opportunity to attend the International convention in Osaka Japan and the leadership forum in Ft. Worth. I’ve heard your desire to serve your communities. I’ve felt the joy when those of you stepped forward to volunteer your services next year. We have accomplished a lot in a little time and our success will continue. We have in place two new orientation leaders in Sharon Allen and PDG Nancy Keyte and two certified guiding Lions in Donna Manuel and Hank Matter. They are part of the MERLO team and are available to assist each club. We have seen major improvements on the LCI web site. You can now down-load training brochures, such as the new orientation guide. We are blessed in our district with the caliber of leadership trainers that we have in PDG Joel and PDG Howard. This weekend we are honored to have PDG Pam Burdick conduct the new member orientation seminar. Fellow Lions, take advantage of these Lions. Attend their seminars, listen and learn. Remember “The First Step – Get Involved!” ‘

Meeting Report

At the November 20, 2002 meeting a video tape from the County was presented by program chair Bob Carr. This was an exciting and interesting video which tells the story of the many and varied responsibilities the County has. The county acts as an agency of the State on many fronts and provides municipal services for citizens in the unincorporated areas of the County. Now we all know the County does more than collect taxes, it also provides services.
