Greetings from “The Lion King”

Since the first of July everything has been a whirl for me. First it was off to Japan and the International Convention in Osaka. Then a tour of three cities in Japan with Toyko being the last stop before coming back to California. Then it was an effort to get back to California time! Japan is 16 hours in front of us time wise! Finally, I think, I'm back to normal! But what is normal?

Thanks to Jim Ward for hosting the meeting at the Bittercreek Railroad. It really was a fun time!

I've been traveling with the Governor as he makes his visitations to Region Clubs. I can't tell you what fun it is to see and visit with Lions from other Clubs. And you know that we all have the same goal in mind to serve our community and support Lions work throughout the world. We are going to have our first District meeting on August 24th. Support our Vice-District Governor as he officially takes the reins of office at the meeting in Carpinteria. Be there and meet a lot of hard working Lions. We had the Governors visit on August 7th, our Board meeting on August 14th, and finally on August 21st Lion Bob Carr has lined up a GREAT program for us to enjoy! I'm looking forward to seeing you all at the meetings!

From the ”LION KING”, JACK GATZ!

District Governor Ruben, gave the annual Governor’s talk at our last meeting. Governor Ruben talked about his goals and the goals of Lion International President Kay K. Fukushima. See article.

Lions International News Kay K. Fukushima's Journey to a Better World

Kay K. Fukushima was born in Sacramento, California, a third generation Japanese-American. His father, a farmer, and his mother, a domestic, were devoted to their family and to making a better life for their children but could not escape the repercussions following the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. Early in 1942, he, and his family, was sent to a relocation camp at Tule Lake, California. Following their release in 1945, they returned to Sacramento, where the only employment his father could secure was with the Southern Pacific Railroad. A year later, they were finally able to return to their farm.

After graduating from high school, President Fukushima enrolled at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), but after a few months had to return home when his father was diagnosed with cancer. Seven months later his father succumbed to this illness and shortly thereafter the future international president was drafted into the army. After the Army he went to Sacramento State College where he graduated with a Marketing Degree. Instrumental in his success in Lionism is his philosophy.

Crucial elements in his personal philosophy are to think outside of the box for new and innovative ideas; have the courage of one's convictions; have compassion and sensitivity and be true to your beliefs; never lose credibility or compromise integrity; be true to your friends; be humble; uplift people; lead by example; always ask questions; do the right thing; never stop learning and always strive for excellence. "Be the best you can be," he said, "and no one will ever question your efforts.
