Greetings from “The Lion King”

Merry Christmas to all.............. During this Holiday Season it is appropriate to wish all the members happiness, joy and prosperity! (And stay out of the Rain!)

I am continually gratified that all the members help to make this Club an exciting, vibrant unit that truly does take part in our community. A GREAT big thanks to all of you who make this happen.

We still have a few things to accomplish in the next six months. Student Speaker contest, the Basketball tournament, the High School 24 hour run, the election of George as our District Governor at the Convention in Laughlin, Nevada, and one more Cabinet meeting in Templeton.

Thanks to all of you for truly bringing SERVICE to the community of Arroyo Grande. Have a safe and sane Christmas and New Year. And, Pam and I will expect to see you at the Polar Bear Dip in Cayucos on January first!!!

The Prez,
From the ”LION KING”, JACK GATZ!

Lion Vice District Governor George Stewart
District News

This issue begins a series on my objectives for next year. I have established seven points that I will pursue my year as District Governor. The discussion of final points will continue through the May issue. These points are not new; however I hope that we can strive to fulfill the objectives at the club level as well as at the district level with a new level of enthusiasm. The first two are: 1) Community Involvement, 2) Community Awareness. It is my goal to promote an expansion of our involvement within our communities. We tend to pursue the same old projects without consideration that maybe the needs of the community have changed. We need to re-evaluate the needs of our communities and undertake projects that will fulfill these needs. Once we have chosen a project we must plan it well and make sure that we have ample support from our members. Existing projects may need re-evaluated too. Perhaps a new approach is required; remember our motto is “We serve”. Let’s examine how we can best serve the needs of our community. We have tools available to assist this evaluation process and we should use these tools. Once we establish the service projects it is important that the community is aware of our involvement. We must be persistent in our effort for publicity. Too often we are asked the question, “Who are the Lions and what do you do?” It is our responsibility to inform the public. Also we should have available information concerning our projects both locally and internationally. The emphases should be on our local involvement. Hopefully if the community is aware of our involvement there will be a desire to become part of the activity. Public or community awareness should be a major tool in recruitment of new members. Let’s continue to take that “first step and get involved.”

Lion Bill Pierson

Long time Arroyo Grande Lions Club Director Bill Pierson first joined our club in 1966. He served as President in 1968 or 1969. For job-related reasons, Bill left in 1972, and rejoined the club in July 1993 after retiring back to Arroyo Grande. Bill was elected Lion of the Year for 1999-2000. Bill worked for Pacific Telephone and Telegraph for over 35 years. During that time he worked with A.T. & T., and American Bell International had him working for the Shah of Iran. Bill has three daughters, Lynn, Barbara, and Becky. Of course, we are all aware that Lynn’s husband (what’s his name?) is our Vice-District Governor. Bill’s family includes seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren! His hobbies are golf and gardening. He would like to see the Arroyo Grande Lions Club increase its membership, especially with some younger members. Bill is a great lion and has been a strong supporter of our club.

Meeting Report

Another Christmas party has been completed. It was, as usual a great party and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Santa was there with his joyful presentation of gifts. All of the kids enjoyed his visit (well maybe one or two of the very youngest had some reservations). There was plenty of good food and we were entertained with song and good cheer. But, that’s not all; our own Lion Secretary John received the Dwight E. Stanford Fellow in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the Student speakers Foundation. Congratulations Lion John.

Lions International News

Dual Club Membership By an overwhelming vote, a resolution was passed at the International Convention in Osaka, Japan to amend the International By-Laws regarding dual membership. "No person shall simultaneously hold membership, other than Honorary or Associate, in more than one Lions club; and no person shall simultaneously hold membership, other than Honorary or Affiliate, in a Lions club or any other service club of like character."

Who am I?

A very dirty little fellow came in from playing in the yard and asked his mother, "Who am I?" Ready to play the game she said, "I don't know! Who are you?" "WOW!" cried the child. "Mrs. Johnson was right! She said I was so dirty, my own mother wouldn't recognize me!"
